
Congressman resigns
In yet another pre-poll jolt to the Congress party, Navi Mumbai district committee president Dynaneshwar Ramdas Patil on Friday resigned from the post as bickering and groupism within the party rocked the local unit.Conforming his resignation, Patil said he did n8217;t want to continue as the district unit president on health grounds. His resignation letter to the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president was cryptic and contained just two paragraphs. Navi Mumbai forms an important part of the Thane Lok Sabha constituency.
Ramzan celebrated
Id-ul-Fitr was celebrated with full traditional gaiety and enthusiasm all over Maharashtra. The celebration marks the end of 29-day-old fast by the Muslim community. In Mumbai, people gathered for special namaz at different mosques and idgahs and later exchanged greetings and offered sweets. People from other communities also joined the Muslim brethren in the celebration. Members of the Muslim community in large numbersthronged the mosques at Bhendi Bazar, Mahim, Bandra, Agripada and Crawford Market and offered special prayers.
Tanker owners call off strike
The ongoing strike of the Maharashtra Tank Lorry Owners8217; Association MTLOA was today called off following assurances given by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray. At a meeting with a delegation of the MTLOA, Thackeray assured them that their grievances will be heard by chief minister Manohar Joshi and Transport Minister Chandrakant Khaire.
Tanker owners in the city are protesting against the state government8217;s road safety drive, which resulted in severe action against overloaded tankers.
