VADODARA, Oct 26: Students at the MS University8217;s faculty of Science boycotted classes and did not take their trial examinations on Tuesday against the faculty8217;s decision disallowed them to opt for a subject of their choice. This was the second day of the strike.
While the faculty authorities maintained that the faculty needs to maintain a standard, students said they should be given the chance to take subjects of their choice if better results were expected.
Faculty Vice-dean S R Pandya said, 8220;If we accept demands of some students then we will have to accept demands of all 50 students who are demanding a change.8221; Pandya added that the faculty would stick to its stand of granting change only on merit.
Student8217;s union general secretary Prakash Verma said that 8220;the strike would continue despite the faculty8217;s view that it would discontinue since there were only three days left for the university to close for vacations.8221; Verma said this was not acceptable to the students.
8220;We were assured of getting subjects of our choice when there were enough vacancies. Now 300 students have already vacated, yet the faculty authorities have not made any concrete effort,8221; said a First Year B Sc student. She added that the faculty authorities deny that any such instructions were provided in admission forms, although they agree to a change from the subsidiary.
8220;After assurance of getting subjects of our choice during admissions, why should we now study a subject which is our second preference?8221; said another First Year student. Pandya, however, specified that at the time of admission every student was told that they can change only subsidiary subjects, not primary subjects.
