Just a week after the Jayalalithaa government lodged a complaint against the Accountant-General (Audit) of Tamil Nadu, two AIADMK MPs today filed a petition in the Madras High Court questioning his continuance in office.

In their quo warranto petitions against the official — T. Theethan — the MPs, P.G. Narayanan and K. Malaisamy, questioned ‘‘on what authority the Accountant-General (Audit) continued to hold the post after he had committed a constitutional impropriety’’.

According to them, Theethan — by addressing a press conference on July 31 where he commented on the state’s financial position during 2003-2004 when the audit report had not yet been placed in the Assembly — had committed a ‘‘constitutional impropriety’’.

‘‘He had deliberately entangled himself in a political thicket and acted as a mouthpiece of some persons with the sole aim of presenting distorted versions to besmirch the image of the Tamil Nadu government,’’ the MPs said.

They also made an interim plea to restrain Theethan from speaking to the press. The Additional Solicitor General, V.T. Gopalan, gave an undertaking that Theethan would not address any press conferences. After accepting the notice issued by the court, Gopalan sought time to file counter.
