A team of Madhya Pradesh Police has reached Sonebhadra to take former BSP MP Narendra Kushwaha to Sidhi, where he is wanted for the rape of a party worker.
One of the 11 MPs expelled from Parliament in 2005 in connection with the cash-for-query scandal, Kushwaha was arrested on Sunday in Sonebhadra in connection with the case. At the time, he had a gunshot wound and he claimed it was sustained in “accidental firing” from his own revolver. He underwent surgery at Heritage Hospital in Varanasi on Monday and is currently in ICU. Doctors have reportedly advised him rest for a few days.
Additional DGP (Crime) Brij Lal said a police team led by the Superintendent of Police of Sidhi in Madhya Pradesh had contacted the Sonebhadra police on Monday. “The team will produce the MP before a magistrate seeking transit remand to take Kushwaha to Sidhi,” Lal said, adding that Kushwaha was currently in the custody of the Uttar Pradesh police.
The Sonebhadra police, however, have not lodged any FIR in connection with the shooting incident in which Kushwaha was injured. “In his written statement, he told the police that his revolver had gone off when he was cleaning it. The police have seized it,” Lal said.
There were reports that Kushwaha’s wife Malti Devi was also shot, but the police are going by her version that she was injured when she fell down the stairs. Lal had no credible explanation for the police failure to get Malti Devi medically examined.
The Madhya Pradesh Police had sought the arrest of Kushwaha in the second week of February. However, it took more than a month for their Uttar Pradesh counterparts to execute the warrant against the MP. When asked about the delay, ADG Lal said: “The Sonebhadra SP said Kushwaha was not available in his house.”
