There seems to be no end to the ongoing confrontation between Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss and AIIMS director Dr P Venugopal. The fresh order of the Health Ministry to reinstate registrar VP Gupta came after he was asked by AIIMS administration to explain the reasons for issuing a false memorandum and relinquish charge till action is taken.

The letter sent by the Health Ministry, signed by R Ramamurthy, under- secretary in the ministry, said that the order dated July 7, 2006 regarding relinquishing of duties of registrar may not be given effect.

The letter said that VP Gupta was 8216;8216;selected through open competition to a sanctioned post of registrar and appointed as such with the approval of competent authority. AS per the schedule to the AIIMS regulations, 1999, the appointing authority for the Group A post in AIIMS is governing body. Accordingly, any order asking him to relinquish the charge of the post can be given by the competent authority8217;8217;.

The AIIMS authorities asked for an explanation on why VP Gupta released an order on June 30, 2006 saying that the director had ordered to adjust the strike period for 17 days of anti-reservation protest and released the pay for those days. AIIMS had asked for an explanation and told him to relinquish duties till then.
