Move to repeal Pressler law

WASHINGTON, May 15: A proposal has been placed in the Senate with the backing of the Clinton administration to repeal the Pressler Amendment that would enable the United States to resume large-scale economic and military aid to Pakistan.

Republican Senator Sam Brownback, who chairs the Senate sub-committee dealing with South Asia, and Democratic member Tom Harkin tabled the proposal yesterday. According to The New York Times, it has quot;the tacit blessings of the Clinton administrationquot;.

Voting on the proposal has been delayed, presumably to allow enough time to the high-level American delegation to talk Pakistan out of carrying nuclear tests. The delegation is led by Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbot.
