Even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived here today to file his nomination papers for re-election to the Rajya Sabha from his 8220;adopted home state8221;, an interesting rival candidate also filed his papers to contest against Singh.

K Padmarajan, hailing from Mettur in Salem district of Tamil Nadu, has already earned fame as 8220;India8217;s most unsuccessful candidate8221; in the Limca Book of Records by logging as many as 57 electoral defeats till 2003. 8220;I know I cannot win a Rajya Sabha election but my intention is to keep breaking my own records every time there is an election,8221; said the 48-year old, who filed his papers before returning officer G P Das without even one MLA backing his candidature.

But Padmarajan is not bothered. After all, he has contested as many as 82 elections so far, very often getting out of the race at the nomination stage itself. In this Rajya Sabha election, for instance, his nomination paper is sure to be rejected because he does not have a proposer.

Elections Padmarajan has contested so far include four Presidential contests, 19 Lok Sabha polls and 15 Rajya Sabha polls, apart from dozens of Assembly and municipal elections in his home state. And people whom he has contested or tried to contest include President APJ Abdul Kalam, former President K R Narayanan, former Vice-President Krishna Kant, former Prime Ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Little wonder then that Padmarajan, who practises homoeopathy and works as a director in a security agency, has proclaimed himself 8220;All India Election King.8221;
