PUNE, May 10: Even as the city failed to receive any measurable rainfall due to premonsoon thundershowers so far, the India Meteorological Department has ruled out its effect on the city8217;s monsoon prospects.

Whereas under the normal conditions Pune should have received a rainfall of about 26 mm by this time of the year starting from January 1, it has received only trace rainfall so far diverting all hopes on the ensuing monsoon season.

Speaking to The Indian Express, IMD spokesperson said that premonsoon thundershower activity is independent of the monsoon and both are altogether separate meteorological phenomena caused by different factors.

He said, 8220;Because of intense heat vertical motion in the air sets in and there is good incursion of moisture. As a result of this the vertically developing clouds are formed. These clouds called cumulonimbus clouds involve lightening and thunder. As a result the precipitation sets in and leads to thundershowers. In case of monsoon it is stratus clouds which cause rain.8221;

Meanwhile, Puneites heaved a sigh of relief as the maximum temperature dropped to 37 degree Celsius in the city on Sunday. The drop in temperature brought great relief to the troubled citizens who had been subjected to intense hot weather conditions prevailing in the city since past one week.

There was also a substantial drop in the minimum temperature which was recorded at 21.7 today. The minimum temperature also had remained unusually above 24 degree Celsius on several occasions in the past week.
