Retired district and sessions court judge B S Mehndiratta takes charge as its founder president

Mohali8217;s wait for an independent District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has finally ended. Although the township gained the status of a district in April 2006, its residents were dependent on consumer forums in Ropar and Patiala till now.

The state government has appointed B S Mehndiratta as the founder president of the forum. Mehndiratta, who retired as a District and Sessions judge from Chandigarh, has taken the charge and begun work to set up the forum.

Punjab State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission Registrar Bhag Singh told Newsline that requisite premises have been rented in Phase II, Mohali, for setting up the forum owing to the unavailability of government accommodation. He added that a superintendent, two stenographers and four clerks was the minimum staff requirement for the district forum.

Speaking to Newsline, Mehndiratta said: 8220;Since I have to begin from scratch and assemble the infrastructure, the forum is likely to start functioning anytime between January 15 and 31.8221;

Welcoming the decision, local consumer rights activists termed the move as 8220;right but much delayed8221;. 8220;It should have been established much before,8221; said advocate K K Sharma. Inputs by Monika Paul
