A month after NRI Jasbir Singh was murdered, Moga police finally managed to get a breakthrough in the case on Wednesday with the arrest of Ashwani, who, according to the police, had pumped several bullets into Jasbir after a conspiracy was hatched by NRI Gursewak, his NRI sister Amanpal, their father Punjab Singh Gill, their mother, a Ludhiana resident Amit and Ashwani himself.
“Ashwani, a constable with 7th IRB posted at Salabatpura, on Wednesday surrendered before the police, as raids were on to arrest him for the past many days,” Moga SSP Ashok Baath told The Indian Express. “Gill and his wife have been arrested too, while police teams are out to nab Amit.”
Jasbir was murdered along with his cousin, Harpreet Singh, while he was returning from his sister’s wedding on February 13. Police suspected it to be a case of contract killing, allegedly carried out at the behest of Jasbir’s estranged NRI girlfriend Amanpal and her brother Gursewak, who had “threatened Jasbir that if he married someone else in India, he would never return to Canada”. Jasbir was to get married on February 14, a day after his sister’s marriage.
The arrest of the Ashwani, Gill and his wife and the revelations made by them during interrogation have paved the way for the police to take up the matter with the Union Government for the extradition of Gursewak and Amanpal. “We will seek their extradition from Canada,” said Baath. During the investigation, sensationally, Gursewak was reportedly found to have married his sister Amanpal on papers to immigrate to Canada.
“This has been corroborated by Ashwani, who is a close friend of Gursewak. He said Gursewak faked himself as Inderjit to marry Amanpal on papers to immigrate,” Baath said, adding that Amit, too, is a close friend of Gursewak. Investigations revealed that they did not charge any money for Jasbir’s murder.
“However, Gill had assured them that he would spend the money required to save them in case they are caught,” Baath added.
