Can you have elections and not sit through a bit of psephology? Not when you are in an autorickshaw in Gujarat, where you are certain to hear some animated, incisive analysis on the electoral chances of the BJP and the Congress.

8220;Modi hi ayega na,8221; says Mehmoodbhai, an auto driver from Jamalpur, who had to face the brunt of the 2002 riots. 8220;Congress mein dum nahin hain aur Modi ke anese achcha bhi hua na The Congress lacks the strength and Modi8217;s return in 2002 has only been beneficial,8221; he says.

Modi may try his best to get business honchos to cheer for him but he couldn8217;t have found a better endorsement that a riot-affected auto driver who thinks the BJP leader is the best bet for the state. 8220; Woh dhamaal riots bura hua. But after that, there has been peace and people are also getting to earn their livelihood,8221; he says.

Mehmoodbhai soon gets nostalgic. 8220;Neta to Indira Gandhi thi. She would come from the airport in an open jeep. None of these leaders can dare to do that. They only put people through a lot of inconvenience,8221; he says.

8220;Modi hi ayega,8221; says Abul Hasan Ansari, a Bihari auto driver from Satellite. 8220;He has all the industrialists by his side. Dekhiye bhaisaab, this government has done nothing for the middleclass; but then which one does? The Congress is too busy fixing its own house and Modi has broken the rest . Who can challenge him now,8221; he asks. Philosophy or psephology?

8220;Woh dhamaal nahin hona chaiye tha. Ek hi cheez usne bura kiya. The only thing Modi did wrong was the riots. He has done a lot for Ahmedabad . Look how it has changed,8221; says Lakshman, another auto driver from Satellite.
