SURAT, June 22: A medical officer was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau ACB sleuths for demanding a bribe from a retired nurse, for clearing her final dues from the department.

According to official information, Sharad Shankarbhai Desai, attached to a primary health centre of Chittpur in Uchhal taluka of Surat district, was arrested for accepting an illegal gratification of Rs 1000 from Ramiben Gamit.

Gamit, who had been serving at the Primary Health Centre as an auxiliary nurse-cum-mid wife, retired from service on April 30, 1997. Wanting to clear her dues, she had approached Desai with an application for the same. Desai asked her to pay Rs 1000 to forward the application.

Gamit, meanwhile, informed the ACB about Desai8217;s demand. The ACB laid a trap and accordingly, on Sunday Gamit 8212; who had been given powdered notes 8212; went to Desai. As she handed over the notes, the ACB team, comprising deputy director B S Vasava, Police Inspectors Merujay and L M Rathod 8212; who were stationed nearby 8212; caught him red-handed.Legal proceedings have been initiated against the erring officer, the ACB said adding he was later released on bail.

Constables Sharad Shinde, Rajendra Patil, Dilip Chevle and Mohammed Salim besides others were part of the raiding team, the release added.
