NEW DELHI, July 29: Mahesh Bhupathi pulled off a shock upset against fourth seeded Adriano Ferreira, ranked No 180, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 to move into the second round of the 100,000 Istanbul Challenger.

Bhupathi now plays No 203 Eyal Ran of Israel in the second round. Ran has a 1-0 record against Bhupathi beating him in three sets in the 1996 Aruba Challenger. In any case, today8217;s win which earned Bhupathi 11 points should help him improve his ranking which had plummeted to a new low of 407 this week.

Meanwhile, top seeded Leander Paes was sent packing in straight sets by qualifier Groer, ranked No. 966 at the Winnetka Challenger in Chicago. Paes lost 4-6, 2-6 in what is probably his worst defeat yet. But Paes was hampered to a great extent by a rib injury he suffered during practice a few days ago.

Elsewhere, Nirupama Vaidyanathan lost to Elena Tatarkova, 3-6, 3-6 in the Bank of West Classic final round of qualifiers at Stanford. Owing to a shoulder injury, she has decided to pull out of the doubles and mayeven take a week off from competition.

She earned 8 points from Stanford this week which should take her to No 160 in next week8217;s rankings. She has picked up 32 points in the last three weeks. Her doubles ranking also went up this week from 228 to 210. She is scheduled to play at the 25,000 Lexington Kentucky Challenger next week.
