Picking on the “huge holes” in the government’s inquiry into cases of alleged disappearance of youth, which tried to debunk reports on 59 persons who went missing in the Mufti Md Sayeed-led coalition government, the Association of Parents of Disappeared Persons (APDP) said the findings were baseless and unfounded.
Today, APDP members, led by rights activist Parvez Imroz, protested against the “government’s aloofness” and pleaded with them to probe the “custodial disappearances” and punish the guilty.
After the probe, the J-K police had said at least 43 of the missing persons were found at their homes. ‘‘The findings claimed that except for 26 names, 13 of which are under investigation, everyone else has been accounted for, adding that 22 persons in the list have joined militants. Six others, they said have died, while two others have been found in custody and cases have been registered against them,’’ said Imroz.
‘‘Even by the government’s own admission, 26 persons have disappeared and of them 13 are under investigation. If six others have died, we believe it is duty-bound to show their bodies,’’ he added.
The APDP are calling for the release of the names of 3,931 persons. ‘‘This’s the number given by none other than Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig at the Assembly in June 2003,’’ said Imroz.
