Militants chased down after blast

One person was killed and at least 15 were injured in an explosion at Bullut Bazar, a rural market in Kamrup district, about 40 kms from here on Wednesday afternoon.

Two persons were nabbed after the local people saw them plant the bomb and escape in a Hyundai Elantra car. The police too reached on time to back the chase.

Kamrup SP Debajit Hazarika said two persons were spotted keeping a bag in front of a shop in the rural market and hurry towards a car that was parked on the Hajo-Nalbari road. 8220;As the blast occurred, some people called up the police, while a couple of others chased them on motorcycles. They managed to intercept the car,8221; Hazarika said.

The two persons, suspected to be ULFA cadres, were from Nalbari, the SP said. Interrogation, however, was yet to start, he added. The blast occurred at 12:40 pm.

One Ulfa activist killed in encounter

GUWAHATI: An ULFA cadre was killed in an encounter with the police in the Nabinnagar locality of Guwahati on Tuesday night.

An Assam Police spokesperson said the police rounded off a rented house in the area well past midnight following information that some ULFA cadres were hiding there. The militants opened fire at the police party as it raided the house leading to an exchange of fire.

The person, killed in the firing, has been identified as one Dip Kalita. Police said Kalita was an explosive expert who hailed from Barama in Nalbari district. The police later recovered 15 kgs of explosives, one live grenade and a PTD circuit.
