Militant killed in encounter, six others arrested in Manipur

An unidentified militant was killed and six others were arrested in separate militancy-related crimes in Manipur.

An unidentified militant was killed and six others were arrested in separate militancy-related crimes in Manipur, official sources said on Saturday.

Sources said a militant was gunned down during an encounter with a combined team of police commandos and 39th Assam Rifles personnel at Khurai area in Imphal east district on Friday evening. They said security personnel, patrolling Khurai area under Heingang police station, detected two persons on a motorcycle moving in a suspicious manner.

When asked to stop, the pillion rider opened fire, sources said adding that commandos and Assam Rifles personnel returned the fire killing him on the spot. The driver of the motorcycle escaped under cover of darkness.

Sources said one 9mm pistol with a magazine loaded with four live rounds was recovered from the spot.

Meanwhile, police commandos and central security forces in separate incidents arrested six militants of different outfits on Friday, sources said.

They arrested militants including two members of Kangleipak Communist Party, a member of People8217;s United Liberation Front, a member of People8217;s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak General Secretary faction and two members of Kangleipak Communist Party Noyon faction from different parts of the state.
