8226; Your editorial 8216;The true torch-bearers8217; and Harsha Bogle8217;s article 8216;Olympic medals?8217; IE, June 11, on the topic of film stars carrying the Olympic torch, were great. But they look like afterthoughts. Why didn8217;t the media, including the Express, get to that list of invitees and protest the shoddy treatment of our sporting heroes and the domination of sponsors and commercialism? All our sports editors should have threatened to boycott the event if they really cared for sport. Probably they were worried about loss of ad revenue or the column space they can sell writing about cricket and film stars. So why shed crocodile tears now?

8226; It is really a matter of shame that film stars were asked to be Olympic torch bearers. This can happen only in India where politicians exploit everything.

8226; Substituting film stars for the Payyoli Express and other sporting greats provides us with a glimmer of our national sports vision.

Rahul, look at Bihar
8226; Rahul Gandhi wants the UP government sacked since there is no law and order in that state IE, June 10. If he is really concerned about the maintenance of law and order, let him also demand stringent action against the government of Bihar. Why exempt that state?

Thank you
8226; Rinki Bhattacharya deserves our thanks for her article, 8216;The home as torture chamber8217;IE, June 1. Domestic violence is not restricted to the uneducated or poor. It is rampant even in very educated families. The problem is that most of us also do not know how to emotionally help the victim. I remember when a 17-year-old cousin of mine had stopped a person on the roadside from hitting his wife and had taken her to a police station, the officer there said, 8220;Why interfere in other people8217;s lives?8221; At home everyone, including myself, told her the same thing. But, today, when I see a friend of mine going through an abusive marriage, I understand what she was trying to do. I still feel helpless though.

Public prosecutor
8226; While passing a judgment on the Best Bakery case, the Supreme Court made it clear that the justice delivery system in Gujarat was being taken for a ride. The apex court observed that the 8220;public persecutor appears to have acted more as a defence counsel than one whose duty was to present the truth before the court8221;. The court also stated that a re-trial should be conducted under the jurisdiction of the Bombay High Court: 8220;Though the witnesses or the victims do not have any choice in the normal course to have a say in the matter of appointment of a Public Prosecutor, in view of the unusual factors noticed in this case, to accord such liberties to the complainant8217;s party, would be appropriate.8221; Yet the Government of Gujarat is bold enough to appoint the public prosecutor for the case without consulting the victims. What legal and moral authority does it have to appoint the public prosecutor? This once again makes it clear that the intention of the Gujarat government is not justice but something else.
