The Municipal Corporation MC has mooted the proposal of free door-to-door garbage collection from the colonies in the city.
The aim is to maintain cleanliness in the areas to prevent the outbreak of diseases.
During monsoons, there had been an outbreak of cholera in the tricity. This raised concerns over the sanitation conditions prevailing in the colonies.
It was also seen that the areas lack basic hygiene. In fact, the outbreak of diseases like cholera, dengue is an annual feature in the slums and colonies. Generally, the authorities go into an overdrive once a problem arises. The colonies are then cleaned up and care is taken to provide better facilities.
Medical Officer Dr G Diwan said: 8220;We feel that taking preventive action should be taken as it is better than cure. Door-to-door garbage collection will ensure that disposal is done properly. With the surroundings being clean, it would lead to improvement in health conditions as well.8221;
He added that residents have been giving excuses that sweepers are not available in their areas. The proposal would solve some of these problems.
Mayor Pardeep Chhabra said: 8220;Proper sanitation is one of our primary concerns. We want to ensure better health for all residents. It is felt that the residents of colonies were reluctant to pay even a small amount for garbage disposal. So, we will be providing the facility free of cost.8221;
In the city, garbage is collected from every household and then taken to the Sehaj Safai Kendras. From here, it is moved to the dumping ground in Dadumajra.
