The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved three new corridors of the Delhi Metro network, including one that will provide connectivity from the new Central government offices at Kartavya Bhawan — and transport visitors to India Gate and the National War Memorial in the heart of the capital.

The Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the three corridors at a cost of

Rs 12,014.91 crore, of which the Union and Delhi governments will contribute Rs 1,759 crore each. The remaining amount, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, would be in the form of loans to be repaid by the Delhi Metro RailCorporation, which is jointly owned by the Union and Delhi governments.

The three corridors would be a part of Delhi Metro Phase VA, covering a total of 16 km, over 13 stations.

The RK Ashram Marg to Indraprastha corridor of 9.91 km will connect the Central Vista area with west, north and old Delhi. Most of the corridor will be underground, with new stations at Kartavya Bhawan, India Gate, War Memorial-High Court and Baroda House. Vaishnaw said this corridor would service 60,000 employees working in the central secretariat and 2 lakh daily visitors. He added that this would reduce CO2 emissions by 33,000 tonnes a year.

The Cabinet decision comes against the backdrop of an alarming decline in air quality in Delhi, with public transport and last-mile connectivity identified as key solutions. The Central Vista corridor will cater to about 60,000 office-goers and nearly two lakh visitors daily.

The other corridors, Aerocity to Indira Gandhi Domestic Airport (Terminal 1) (2.26 km), and Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj (3.9 km), will connect South Delhi to the domestic airport, an official statement said. Commuters from Noida and Faridabad going to Gurugram will also benefit from the Tughlakabad corridor, Vaishnaw said.

The Minister said the corridors would be constructed in three years. Asked about the status of the Faridabad-Gurugram Metro line, he said the feasibility study was being conducted. He said tunnel boring machines would be used for the projects.
