In a push to ease traffic congestion and address chronic waterlogging in South Delhi, the Delhi government has cleared three major infrastructure projects — Modi Mill flyover, Savitri Cinema flyover and a stormwater drain along the Mehrauli-Badarpur (MB) Road.

The projects, to be executed by the Public Works Department (PWD), involve a combined expenditure of over Rs 759 crore and have been pending for several years due to planning and approval delays, officials said. They received the go-ahead from the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC).

“Flyovers alone cannot solve urban problems. That is why traffic decongestion and stormwater drainage are being planned together, so that citizens receive lasting relief, not temporary fixes,” PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said.

What does the project involve

The flyover project includes the construction of a new two-way Modi Mill flyover at the Outer Ring Road-Captain Gaur Marg intersection and the doubling of the existing Savitri Cinema flyover.

According to project details, the Modi Mill flyover will have a 1,140-metre three-lane carriageway from Kalkaji Mandir towards Modi Mill and an 870-metre stretch in the opposite direction.

The Savitri Cinema flyover will include a 435-metre three-lane half flyover.

The corridor between the two junctions will have three lanes in each direction to allow uninterrupted traffic movement. Officials said the project is expected to remove traffic signals at key junctions and reduce congestion on the Outer Ring Road and GK-II Road.

The approved cost of the flyover works is Rs 371.75 crore, with a completion timeline of 30 months, officials said.

The EFC has also approved the MB Road stormwater drain project, which aims to address waterlogging caused by damaged, missing and undersized drains. The project will cover an 11.38-km stretch from Lado Sarai T-point to Pul Prahladpur and involves the construction of 22.76 km of precast RCC box drains at a cost of Rs 387.84 crore. The implementation period is 2.5 years.
