The Uttar Pradesh Government on Sunday suspended seven more IPS officers, including Additional Director General rank officer B K Bhalla, in connection with the police recruitment scam. The Government also annulled appointments of 7,400 policemen, including Police Wireless Department employees, jawans of the PAC and the civil police.

Meanwhile, Additional Director General of Police S K Mishra, who headed the high-level committee to probe the irregularities into the recruitments, disclosed the “sex angle” of the scam. Besides, Mishra also disclosed that a politician, who was in power at that time, had intervened in the appointment process. He, however, did not disclose the name of the politician.

At a press conference held by Principal Secretary (Home) J N Chamber, Mishra said several unsuccessful women candidates had levelled charges against the authorities involved in the appointments.

Although there was no evidence indicating sexual exploitation of women candidates, several aspirants had met him and told him that they were asked for sexual favours. “In 30 years of service this is the first time that girls openly levelled such allegations. Attempts were made to sexually exploit them,” Mishra said.

The Mulayam Singh Yadav Government had appointed about 22,000 men in the UP Police force through different recruitment boards. Later, Chief Minister Mayawati constituted a high-level committee to probe the irregularities in the appointments.
