Sending a clear signal that she was in no hurry to join any camp and would prefer to remain equidistant for now, BSP chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati did not attend a dinner hosted at the Prime Minister8217;s Race Course Road residence this evening to mark three years of the UPA in office.
Being sought out by both coalitions after her spectacular ride to power in UP, Mayawati, Congress sources said, declined an invitation to the dinner. BSP votes could hold the key in the event of a contest between the UPA and NDA for the next man in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
But another UP leader, Ajit Singh of the RLD, who parted ways with Mulayam Singh Yadav just before the UP polls, was present at the dinner.
The UPA8217;s Left allies turned up late, only after Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi were done with their speeches.
And the one man who stood out was Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar who chose a red kurta for the occasion 8212; he has been in the news for openly questioning some of the government8217;s policies.
Union Road and Transport Minister T R Baalu, whose party DMK has also been the talk of political circles after the Maran-ouster episode, was much sought out at the dinner.
