Man held for electrocuting labourer

A 50-year-old labourer was allegedly beaten to death by his employer for stealing a mobile phone at Garia on Sunday evening.

A 50-year-old labourer was allegedly beaten to death by his employer for stealing a mobile phone at Garia on Sunday evening. Police said Meghdoot Adhikari, alias Jaga was arrested on Sunday night for allegedly giving electric shocks to the labourer, leading to his death. The complaint was lodged by an eyewitness, Hiralal Yadav.

Yadav in his FIR said, 8220;I saw Jaga, Md Kazirul and Shankar Mistri, both labourers, and Sajal Bhattacharjee, a contractor, severely beating up the labourer. When I asked them the reason, Jaga said the worker had stolen Sajal8217;s mobile,8221;. He said that the worker was electrocuted after which he lost consciousness. 8220;When I asked them to spare the man, Jaga threatened me with dire consequences,8221; Yadav said.

Officers of Sonarpur Police Station recovered the worker8217;s body from a roadside hotel at Kamalgaji on Monday night. Superintendent of Police, South 24 Parganas, Parveen Kumar said: 8220;It was a cold-blooded murder.8221;

Initial post-mortem report suggests that the man was electrocuted. There were also injury marks on his body, the officer said.
