KOCHI, April 17: Defending champion Delhi, Railways, Maharashtra A and B qualified for the semi-finals in the team event for the Gurudutt Trophy in inter-state bridge championship here today.

In the first quarter-final match, the senior string of Maharashtra defeated Andhra Pradesh by 14 IMP 64-50. The 32 board quarter-finals were played in three sessions of 16 boards each.

In the first half, the score was 44-31 in favour of Maharashtra A. Andhra lost 34 IMP in three boards as they missed a game, a slam and did not go for a sacrifice. Maharashtra A added one IMP 20-19 in the second half, thereby winning the match by 14 IMP 64-50.

In the second match, Maharashtra B ousted Tamil Nadu by 21 IMP 84-63. Maharashtra took a lead of nine IMP 49-40 and added another 12 IMP in the second half 35-23, thereby winning the match by 21 IMP 84-63.

In the third match, Delhi knocked out West Bengal by 13 IMP 87-74. In the first half, Delhi took a lead of eight IMP 44-36. West Bengal lost theinitiative, giving away 25 IMP in two boards. In one board, West Bengal frittered 12 IMP, after having given penalties at both ends. In another board, West Bengal went for a non-existing slam losing 13 IMP. In the second half, Delhi added another 5 IMP and won the match by 13 IMP 87-74.

Karnataka, the last surviving team from South Zone, also departed when Railways defeated the team by 11 IMP. In the first half, Railways took a slender lead of one IMP 21-20. In the second half, Railways added another 10 IMP and moved to the semis, having won the match by 55-44.

The line-up in the semis is Maharashtra A v/s Maharashtra B and Railways v/s Delhi.
