MUMBAI, NOV 21: The first phase of the construction of railway over bridges (ROBs) worth over Rs 102.5 crores at ten places in the State through Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and Indian Railway Construction Company (IRCON) would be completed by September 1999.

Announcing this at a press conference here, Public Works Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the first phase will cover four places in Nagpur, three in Nashik, and one each in Mumbai, Aurangabad and Pune. “Work at five places is in progress at full swing,” he added. The second phase of the proposed ROBs would cost Rs 200 crores.

The government had identified 90 places where they can be constructed, out of which 29 have been taken up on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis. A total investment of Rs 1200 crores is expected for the 90 robs. A study group comprising PWD secretaries M V Patil, A B Pawar and MSRDC Joint Managing Director Pramod Bongirwar will submit their report regarding the feasibility of constructing railwayover bridges at the remaining places to Minister of State for Railways, Ram Naik. The total cost of building 29 such bridges on BOT basis is estimated to be Rs 302 crores.

For the second phase, preparation of plans and estimates and general arrangement drawing (GAD) are in progress, he added. Gadkari said it has been observed that many railway crossing vehicular traffic is held up due to lack of railway over bridges. This results in congestion of traffic, more journey time, wastage of fuel and risk of accidents.

He said to overcome difficulties in taking up these works, he had approached the Ministry of Railways for seeking co-operation for expeditious construction. Maharashtra is the first state in India which has come forward to hold meetings in connection with railway overbridges with the Ministry of Railways. “Naik assured to extend all co-operation towards the completion of the project,” he adding that only Maharashtra and Gujarat came forward in support of constructing such bridges though privateparticipation.
