NOVEMBER 2: Madras University edged past a fighting Mumbai University 2-1 in the finals of the All-India Inter-Zonal University Football Championship at Nehru Stadium at Fatorda today, according to information available here.Madras University, the 1995 finalists, who with their win lifted the Ashutosh Mukerjee Shield, took time to settle down and drew first blood in the 38th minute through Elwaseg Badr after missing two chances.Five minutes latter, Badr struck again when he beat 'keeper Conrad Correia with an angular shot off a forward pass from P Senthil Kumar.After change of ends, Badr was unlucky to score his third hat-trick when his try from inside the box hit the post off a square pass from V P Muthu to become the highest scorer with 12 goals.Mumbai University, who dominated the first and last quarters of the match, have themselves to blame for the defeat as they failed to score several chances that came their way. However, they found the reducer through Agnelo Fernandes in the 66th minute off a pass from substitute Padam Dansingh.Prolific striker Abhishek Yadav, who plays for Mahindras, was well marked by the rival defence but was off colour today as he failed to score four clear chances.Yesterday, West Zone champion Laxmi Bai National Institute of Physical Education beat Calcutta University with an emphatic 5-2 win to take the third place.
