LUDHIANA, April 27: The Economic Offences Wing has unearthed misappropriation of government funds under Landless Agricultural Labourers General Insurance Scheme and arrested two persons in this connection.
According to SSP Dinkar Gupta, the two accused Karamjit Singh of Pamali village and Darshan Singh, sarpanch of the same village, have confessed having secured several claims under LALGI scheme from LIC unit No 3 in Sham Nagar, here, on the basis of forged documents in connivance with LIC officials.
Interestingly, some of the persons shown as dead were still alive and almost all the beneficiaries were related to Karamjit Singh, while Sarpanch Darshan Singh had provided attestation on the death certificates of all those shown as dead.
Varinder Kumar, SP Hq, who was investigating the case, told ENS that the interrogation of the accused had revealed that Karamjit had fraudulently received claims for the death of his close family members. It was further revealed that for each bogus claim processed and paid, a commission was given to some LIC officials for not conducting verification of the genuineness of the claim.
