Supreme cognisance

8226; The open bragging by the perpetrators of the crimes in the Gujarat 2002 pogrom makes it incumbent on the Supreme Court of India SCI to take suo motu cognisance of the matter. The SCI could even recommend to the President of India, the dissolution of Gujarat government under article 86 2 read with article 356 1 of the Constitution, for the failure of the constitutional machinery, if the state does not take immediate action against the accused.

However, all those Muslim leaders and other sympathisers of the victims demanding action against Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his colleagues should understand that the SCI is already seized of the matter Gujarat 2002 carnage. The Supreme Court is legally and constitutionally under article 129 of the Constitution expected to take prompt action against the accused.

Under Article 144 of the Constitution every authority, civil and judicial, in India is expected to act in aid of the SCI.

Facts speak

8226; In his column 8216;Front Foot8217; , Rajeev Shukla does not appear to have checked the facts correctly in the piece headlined, 8216;Modified8217;. Narendra Modi has always been talking of representing all Gujaratis right from the beginning. This is not new. When Shukla says that a sizeable number of BJP MLAs and MPs from the state are disgruntled with Modi, the actual fact is that only 12 out of 129 MLAs are making a lot of noise. Shukla should also visit Gujarat when he says that development in Gujarat is nowhere to be seen outside of a few big cities. Because of check dams and other initiatives of the government, agriculture production in value terms has gone up four times in five years compared to sluggish agricultural growth throughout the country. All 18,000 villages in Gujarat have 24-hour power supply, even when the capital of the country is beset by power failures every day. Road connectivity is estimated to be the highest in Gujarat. One would have expected a Rajya Sabha member like Rajeev Shukla to have come out with more responsible statements.

Cong in n-labyrinth

8226; The response of the government and the Congress has baffled the citizens at large. In fact it has raised more questions than it has answered. It had asserted that the deal is in the interest of the country and would help its energy requirements. But despite all this hype, the government is going slow on the deal. The nation is now wondering what has changed overnight. Was the deal not in the interest of our country?

If it was not, then why did the government go ahead with it? If, on the other hand, it is in India8217;s interest, why this change of mind? These are questions that the Congress Party cannot escape.

8226; I found the front page anchor, 8216;Baseball hits home run in Manipur, 20 clubs in one year8217;, very heartening. It is simply amazing to read that 183 registered players have come up since the first baseball camp held last year. It goes to show the immense wealth of talent and interest in sports in the Northeast. It is also good news to learn that while Manipuri youth of yesterday got alienated and joined militant outfits, the youth of today are fighting feelings of alienation by doing things 8212; whether it is singing, studying or sports 8212; that they enjoy. We wish these young heroes the very best in their sporting careers!
