Irresponsible protest
8226; With reference to your editorial, 8216;India Nirman8217; IE, March 16, which comprehensively deals with the issues involved, let us not forget that India that is Bharat, as our Constitution notes, is also a land of contradictions. Just when the CPM is redeeming itself vis-a-vis industrialisation of West Bengal by forsaking its old opposition, Mamata Banerjee, who does not appear to be a mature politician, is stepping into the space vacated by it, lock, stock and barrel literally.
After instigating violence and worse, which results in death, destruction and disruption, predictably joined by those opposed to the CPM and not its industrialisation policy, for the dismissal of the CPM-led government, compensation for the dead and injured and abandonment of the Tata Motors project and the proposed SEZ at Nandigram 8212; pray, do Banerjee and those other political parties, including ironically the Congress lending support to her, appreciate that the money comes from taxpayers to meet all their demands, including for the cost overruns, besides risking the investors abandoning their projects?

No provocation
8226; This is with reference to killing of more than 10 people in Nandigram in police firing. This is an act of cold-blooded murder and is highly condemnable. The incident exposes the dictatorial attitude of the communist regime in Bengal.

Talk to them
8226; The violence that is intermittently erupting in Nandigram is testimony to the complete lack of communication between the administration and the local people.
Although West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee approved a proposal to bring industry to Nandigram, he hardly made attempts to take the people into confidence who would be affected in the land acquisition process for this project. The Opposition took undue advantage of this factor and used these people as a tool to thwart this activity by propelling them to impeach the government8217;s intentions.
The West Bengal CM has, no doubt, every right to take steps towards the economic empowerment of his state but let him do so by convincing his people about its benefits, especially in the long run.

It8217;s the FDI
8226; If India does not wish to slow down its growth and lag behind by jeopardising the SEZ projects, political violence, instigated by certain anarchist elements over such projects, will have to be exposed and checked. Of course rehabilitating the affected persons and devising a genuine compensation formula may not be an easy process. Yet the public outcry at acquisition seems unnatural and manipulated when the land is generally saline, holdings small and economically unviable and the manpower unskilled and too poor to continue with its agricultural use.In such a transparent situation if the CPM uses its political machine first to rouse the protest and then to crush it with state power, the adverse consequences may not be limited to West Bengal. It could affect FDI in other parts of the country too.

Irish anthem
8226; Who could have thought the World Cup would come alive with a match involving minnows Ireland! But the verve with which they held Zimbabwe to a draw gives hopes that cricket8217;s fraternity will grow.
