France and Nepal
8226; The events in Nepal remind me of the French revolution 8212; a landmark event in world history, when democratic forces wrenched France from the anarchy of the rule of Louis XVI. The pro-democracy masses stormed the Bastille, the symbol of tyrannical rule. I think the Nepalese masses should do the same by storming the Narayanhiti Palace and overthrowing Gyanendra. Although Nepal, 2006, is different from France, 1789, there is international pressure growing for the restoration of democracy in the country and the seven-party alliance has done the right thing by not
accepting the king8217;s proposal.

Maoist threat
8226; This is with reference to the news report in your paper dated April 22, on the Left getting a call from top Maoist leaders in Nepal. Herein lies the danger of the present situation in Nepal. While democracy needs to be restored to each Nepali, there can be no getting away from the fact that the Maoists in Nepal are dangerous extremists, and their ascendancy poses a threat to India. If it is proved that Nepali Maoists have a direct link with Indian Left parties, our Left leaders should be questioned by the CBI.

Excellent work
8226; I must congratulate you on the excellent work you have been doing in promoting wildlife conservation 8216;Vanishing vultures8217;, The Sunday Express, April 23. Thanks so much for the
centerpage story which is really topical right now. It was very heartening to see great write-ups by Mike Pandey and Jay Mazoomdaar on this vital issue. Mike Pandey8217;s film on the subject too comes just in time to emphasise the imminent catastrophe if the problem is not tackled immediately. As wildlife lovers we8217;ve been doing our bit by lobbying with the PM to take diclofenac sodium off the shelves, an assurance he once gave but which hasn8217;t yet been translated into reality. Your paper has always followed the tradition of fearless journalism. Hats
off to you!

Swamping Dhoni
8226; The media never seems to leave any stone unturned to make or mar a young talent. This time all the focus is on Dhoni. He is inundated by applause and large companies are zooming in to sign him up. In the process, a player who could perform even better gets carried away by the wave of popularity. I won8217;t be surprised if Dhoni8217;s performance gets affected by the overwhelming coverage he is getting. Will our media allow him to concentrate on his cricket so that he can maintain his
consistency?

Strikes and us
8226; The recent strike by the State Bank of India employees as well as the BEST Undertaking, Mumbai, had put lakhs of people into needless hardships. What is baffling is that the government, in both cases, gave in to employees8217; demands. If this was to be the end-result, why were the common people put to such hardships?

Shed the coat
8226; The Bar Council of India has rightly decided to dispense with referring to judges as 8220;My Lord8221;. Now is the time to dispense with the antique custom imported from the British of donning the 8220;kala coat8221; black coat in all our courts of law. It is not in sync with this country8217;s sense of dress, or its weather.
