Continuing with their aggressive stance on the Indo-US nuclear deal, the Left parties have decided to oppose the Government8217;s move to attend the meeting of the Board of Governors of IAEA, scheduled to be held early next month.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Left parties on Friday. 8220;We have always been against operationalisation of the 123 agreement. And the Government has not been able to produce more details which would convince us regarding the necessity of the deal,8221; CPIM Politburo member Sitaram Yechury told The Sunday Express.
According to him, the Left is against the Government attending the meeting of the Board of Governors. 8220;We would convey our position to the Government in the next meeting of the UPA-Left coordination committee on the Indo-US nuclear deal,8221; he said.
The Left refuses to buy the argument put forward by the Government that the shortage of uranium fuel can be solved once the deal is operationalised. 8220;There is no doubt that India is currently experiencing a shortage of uranium. The question is, is this shortage due to actually running out of nuclear fuel as it is being projected, or due to a temporary shortage, created either through a lack of proper planning or deliberately in order to push a high cost import-based nuclear energy sector?8221; asks a statement issued by the Left.
During the meeting, a section of the Left, especially the junior partners, said meetings of the UPA-Left coordination committee on the deal were 8220;futile8221; as there was no meeting point on the issue between the two sides. RSP and Forward Block even demanded suspension of the next meeting on May 28. But the CPM and the CPI said the Government should be given a longer rope to handle the matter.
The Left is expected to evolve a final position on the issue at its next meeting which would be held after the Central Committee meeting of the CPIM later this month.
