Parliament may be stalled if petrol hike not withdrawn: BJP

Main Oppn also hits out at allies, saying they were complicit in the decision to hike price.

Demanding an immediate rollback of the petrol hike,BJP today made a veiled threat of stalling Parliament during the winter session if the government failed to do so.

The main Opposition also hit out at UPA allies, saying they were “part and parcel” of the hike. The comments come at a time when Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has sought an appointment with the Prime Minister tomorrow to convey its unhappiness over the hike.

“If the government wants the upcoming session to run smoothly they must roll back prices immediately… What we demand, what the people of this country demand is to a rollback of the petrol hike because there is no justification,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.

The party maintained on the day the hike of Rs 1.80 per litre of petrol was announced, international prices of crude had actually fallen.

Javadekar insisted that refined petrol can be sold at Rs 34/litre in Delhi and Rs 36/litre in Mumbai.

“Why the extra charge… because this is a totally unjustified move. For when we talk of pricing petrol,it is based on obnoxious concepts and it seems that the government is insensitive towards the people’s worries and aspirations,” he said.

The BJP said the government has lost touch with reality and this has made the people angry.

On reports that the government may go for further deregulation of diesel too,BJP said it “needs all out condemnation because this is further harassment” and has no real justification.

Javadekar reasoned that one cannot bring policy changes in the name of reforms when people are already living under double digit inflation.
