New processes of surgical techniques in urogynaecology were discussed on the second day of the international live operative workshop being organised by the Department of Urology at the PGI today. The two-day workshop concluded at the institute with sessions focusing on problems including operative techniques in hernia.

Dr Rakesh Kapoor from Lucknow, demonstrated that a simple hernia mesh meant for hernia repair can be fashioned to the need for pelvic floor repair and thus, the indigenously designed mesh will cut the cost factor of the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse.

Dr Linda Cardozo from UK and Dr Pranathy Reddy from Hyderabad demonstrated other methods for the treatment of prolapse.

Earlier in the day, the sessions by experts from various institutes across the country highlighted that monofilament or polypropylene mesh adds to the strength of pelvic floor, to prevent recurrence of big prolapse.

During the workshop, the contemporary techniques of repair, both natural tissue as well as polypropylene mesh, were discussed.

8220;Monofilament mesh application and proper anchorage to the pelvic wall adds to the strength of the pelvic support and hence the recurrence of the organ prolapse can be minimised, especially in larger prolapse,8221; emphasised the doctors at the end of the session.

Dr Ajay Rane said the addition of this technique has an inherent problem of erosion, which may occur in upto 12 per cent of cases.
