Meghalaya Chief Minister D.D. Lapang on Thursday undertook an aerial survey of areas in the Garo Hills region where floods have affected more than one lakh people. Lapang landed at Ampati from where he reviewed the situation in Garobadha, Tikrikilla, Mahendragunj and Phulbari. On his return, the CM asked district officials to carry on ‘‘maximum possible’’ relief and send him a detailed report on ‘‘pre-flood status’’ for restoration and repair work. He also directed them to furnish a ‘‘flood-management comprehensive plan’’ in all sectors. The worst-affected West Garo Hills district was given a total of Rs 15 lakh for relief work.Assam situation remains grimGUWAHATI: The overall flood situation in Assam remained grim on Thursday with water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries still rising and road and rail communications disrupted. The death toll is at 114. Road communication between lower and upper Assam remained disrupted with NH 37 inundated at Dharamtul and Nellie in Morigaon district. One person was also reported missing when a boat carrying 20 passengers capsized at Jagibhakat Gaon here. Nineteen people, including a child and four women, were rescued.FCI sets up crisis management groupNEW DELHI: The Food Corporation of India has set up a crisis management group to meet the situation arising out of drought and flood in the country. The group comprises senior officers of the corporation. ‘‘The group has started functioning and is monitoring the movement and stock level of foodgrains to ensure that sufficient quantities are made available in these areas throughout the country,’’ an FCI release said. — ENS & Agencies
