England captain Michael Vaughan was on 28 and Alastair Cook had scored 19 when bad light stopped play at Sinhalese Sports Club ground.

Earlier Prasanna Jayawardene scored a defiant 79 and shared 98 runs with tailender Dilhara Fernando 36 not out for the ninth wicket after centuries from captain Mahela Jayawardene 195 and opener Michael Vandort 138. Resuming the day on 379-4, Sri Lanka lost overnight batsman Jehan Mubarak with only 20 runs added to the total after the left hander gloved a rising delivery from Steve Harmison to Ian Bell at slip.

Then Mahela Jayawardene missed out on his fourth double-hundred when he top-edged a sweep to Panesar for an easy catch by Paul Collingwood.

Chaminda Vaas made just 4 runs before he top-edged a catch to Bell at slip off Harmison, who finished with 3-111. Left-arm spinner Monty Panesar trapped Lasith Malinga lbw for 9 runs soon after tea to leave Sri Lanka 450-8. Left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom had the best bowling figures for England with 3-100.
