Lanco, Tata Power lowest bidders for two ultra mega power projects

Bids the first two ultra mega power projects at Sasan and Mundra have been decided with the Lanco group emerging the lowest bidder for the Sasan project while the Tatas emerging the lowest for the Mundra project.

After the price bids for the two UMPP were opened today, the Lanco group emerged as the lowest bidder for the 4,000 mw Sasan project in Madhya Pradesh quoting an average tariff of Rs 1.196/unit which was followed by the Anil Ambani group promoted REL quoting a tariff of Rs 1.3 /unit. The third in the race for this project which is to use domestic coal is Tata power that quoted a price of Rs 1.4/unit.

For the Mundra project based on imported coal in Gujarat, again a 4,000 mw project, the Tata group quoted the lowest tariff of Rs 2.26 per unit. The second lowest price was again from the Anil Ambani group that quoted a price of Rs 2.66 per unit for the project. The third lowest bid for the project was from the Adani group that quoted a price of Rs 2.69/unit.

The deals for the two projects are expected to be finalsied by the year end with the companies thereafter having one year to achieve financial closure. Power secretary R.V. Shahi said that the next such project to be awarded would be at Krishnapatnam.
