At least four passengers were injured when the Koraput-Howarh Samaleswari Express jumped the tracks near Rayagada on Saturday morning.
Official sources say the engine and three bogies — a three-tier AC compartment and two general compartments — derailed around 8.20 am, when the train was passing through a hilly terrain between Bhalumaska and Liliguma stations. The train reportedly hit a boulder lying on the tracks, minutes away from a tunnel. Railway officials say they are probing the reason behind the derailment. Though railway authorities denied any injury reports, sources here say, at least four passengers were hurt. The railway manager, Waltair division, and a relief train from Koraput have rushed to the accident site.
The derailment affected movement of traffic along the single line route, as a number of trains were either cancelled or terminated. The 8447 Bhubaneswar-Koraput Hirakhand Express was terminated at Katiaguda. Its corresponding train was terminated at Rayagada. The authorities cancelled the 241 Rayagada-Koraput Passenger, while its corresponding train was terminated at Rauli-Jenapur Section. Similarly, the 238 Vishakahpatnam-Koraput Passenger was terminated at Rayagada, while the 6-Dn Rayagada Passenger was cancelled.
