AMRITSAR, Aug 20: The 100th birth anniversary of Lala Achint Ram, father of Krishan Kant, father of Vice President of India, was celebrated with great zeal in his native village Kot Mohammed Khan, 50 km from here, yesterday.
Lala Achint Ram, former Member of Parliament and follower of Mahatma Gandhi had participated in the freedom struggle. Suman Krishan, wife of the Vice President, had specially arrived to attend a `Sarb Dharam’ sammelan organised in the ground of village school. Earlier, in the morning, a `hawan puja’ was performed in the ancestral house of Lala Achint Ram which was donated to village panchayat to run a `Balwadi’ and girls sewing and stiching training centre.
The companions of Lala Achint Ram in freedom struggle, Sathi Bhagat Ram Moga, Giani Harjit Singh and many others also participated in the celebrations. They recalled the stories of patriorism of Lala Achint Ram and his contribution in bringing about social reforms in society.
Suman Krishan said Lala Achint Ram had believed in the principle of simple living and noble thinking, and he had never lost an opportunity to help the poor and down-trodden people. She thanked the people of village and area for remembering Lalaji. She said his birth day would be celebrated every year on August 19.
She expressed concern over lack of basic amenities in the native village of great patriots and requested the district authorities to give priority to the village in development activities. She met old family friends and intracted with villagers. Rashmi Kant, son of Krishan Kant, Subhdara Khosla, his sister, Ved Parkash maternal uncle and Satya Parkash, secretary of Lok Sewa Sambhal Sanstha accompanied Suman Krishan.
