Mumbai, April 22: Former Indian pace bowler Abey Kuruvilla announced his retirement from first class cricket with a tinge of sadness (for leaving the game he loves so much) and happiness (since this will give chance to new young bowlers) on the fourth day of the Ranji Trophy cricket final at the Wankhede Stadium.

Kuruvilla (31) made his debut in that memorable Ranji final in 1991. Mumbai lost in the last over against Haryana with Dilip Vengsarkar making a hundred and Kuruvilla being run out in that last over. This time, he will be leaving the game on a high note with Mumbai poised to win back the Ranji Trophy, needing three wickets on the last day on Sunday to wrap up the match against Hyderabad.

The gangling Kuruvilla also played for India in 10 Test matches and 25 One-day Internationals taking 25 wickets each between 1994-1997.

Speaking to reporters after the end of the day’s play, Kuruvilla used the opportunity to thank all his captains, especially Sanjay Manjrekar and Sachin Tendulkar, and his colleagues along with the media, who supported him throughout his career.

When asked whether there was any specific reason behind this move, Kuruvilla said, “I had decided at the beginning of the season itself that this would be my last. A lot of young boys are coming up and I have to make room for them, there is no specific reason.” Kuruvilla, however, said he would continue to play for his company.
