
MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 26: Indian spin spearhead Anil Kumble overtook the legendary Bishan Singh Bedi as the second highest wicket taker for India in Tests. The Karnataka leggie went past Bedi8217;s haul of 266 when he had South African Gary Kirsten caught by wicket-keeper Nayan Mongia in South Africa8217;s second innings on the third day of the first Test at the Wankhede Stadium here on Saturday.
Playing his 60th Test, Kumble was three short of Bedi8217;s tally before the start of the Mumbai Test. Kumble took two wickets in the first innings to draw level with and with a haul of four wickets is now eyeing coach Kapil Dev8217;s distant Indian and world mark of 434.
On Friday, Mongia became the third Indian wicket-keeper 8212; and 23rd overall 8211;to complete 100 Tests dismissals when he caught Mark Boucher off debutant left-arm spinner Murali Kartik. Mongia achieved the milestone in his 41st Test.
The Indians preceding him in acheving the feat are: Syed Kirmani 160 catches and 38 stumpings in 88 Tests and Kiran More 110 catches, 20 stumpings in 49 Tests. Mongia has taken 94 catches and effected seven stumpings so far.
