PARIS, MAY 31: Brazilian eighth seed Gustavo Kuerten advanced to the quarter-finals of the men8217;s singles at the French Open here today, easily defeating Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic in straight sets.

Kuerten made a slow start, losing the opening three games. But there was no stopping the 1997 champion after that and he recovered to win 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in just 1hr 38min.

Ulihrach, who called on the services of a physio to massage his left thigh at 1-2 down in the third, dumped another routine forehand in the net as Kuerten sealed victory.

Kuerten will now meet either Arnaud Di Pasquale of France or Andrei Medvedev of Ukraine in Wednesday8217;s quarter-finals.

Agassi through

Andre Agassi played one of the great matches of his stellar career to beat defending champion Carlos Moya in four sets Sunday and advance to the quarter-finals of the French Open men8217;s singles.

The flamboyant American, fired up to win the only Grand Slam title that has eluded him, beat fourth-seeded Spaniard Moya 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-1.

Agassi, without a Grand Slam title for over four years and the only American left in the men8217;s draw, matched Moya shot for shot in a compelling centre court battle and eventually broke his opponent8217;s will as Moya made increasingly numerous errors .

Moya maintained his unfortunate record of never having retained a singles title while Agassi moved to within three victories of becoming the first American to take the title here since Jim Courier in 1991-92.

Agassi8217;s win took him 2hr 30min and he sealed it with a typically audacious lob.He Left the court to a rousing ovation.

But 13th-seeded Agassi8217;s win was only one of two huge surprises on the slow redclay at Roland Garros.

The 21-year-old has never previously made the quarter-finals at a Grand Slam, buT did well to negate the power and speed of Safin.
