PUNE, June 16: I was saddened by the general trend of the guys expecting the girls to be a perfect embodiment of many endowments 8211; in the so-called right proportions or should we say pliancy8217; subject to convenience!
It is not that this trend did not exist before. In fact, this is what has been happening with girls since aeons, at least, in the conventional Indian context. It is only more disheartening to know that modernism has put extra and unwarranted pressure on the woman of today 8211; expecting her to be traditional yet modern, independent yet dependent, outgoing yet docile, someone who shares a good rapport, stands by him, does not threaten him and8230; so on and so forth. To relieve the men of the plight of hunting for that perfect blend of all these ingredients 8211; the cities ought to have outlets proclaiming custom-made wives available.
Jokes apart, isn8217;t it highly inequitable, that such unrealistic demands are imposed on a young girl who is just a mere mortal like anyone else. She has her own limitations and her own assets. She cannot be a symbol of antithetical-perfection8217;? Also she has to leave everything 8211; even her maiden name behind her and start a life all over again with new faces around, new relationships that form in a day8217;s time and a new code of conduct. In such a situation it is ethically binding on the guy as her life-partner and caretaker to make her feel welcome and help her to acclimatise to the new environment. In this state of flux, her self-esteem can suffer irreparable damage if she is made out to feel inferior or not quite cutout8217; for being the perfect woman! She is young and has her own aspirations, with respect to her career or conjugal bliss 8211; which she, on her part, seeks to fulfill by subjugating her own individuality.
Not being a feminist myself in any sense of the term 8211; I vote for equality not of the sexes or equality not born out of the fight between the two. Each is unique, basically different. Doesn8217;t the equality fight seem nonsensical between two disparate entities? I speak of equality in a totally different light 8211; that born out of sheer respect for one another8217;s freedom and love for each other! In fact, no forces of the name male-chauvinism8217; or feminism8217; can exist between a couple who understand the need of giving each other due space8217; and making allowances for the foibles and follies of one another.
After all, what are the guys looking for? Pliant slaves8217; who obey every command or life-partners8217; with whom they can share a good camaraderie! The guys, practically speaking, should base their choice on personal preferences, the family background they come from and the kind of lifestyle they envisage for themselves. Accordingly, they should choose a housewife or a career woman 8211; whoever fits the bill, but not expect her to be a little something of everything.
Also, the traditional role philosophy of 8220;guys are supposed to earn and girls are supposed to take care of the family8221; has undergone a radical change in today8217;s world of rising standards of living and luxuries becoming basic necessities of life. Where do you think the higher disposable income draws it source?
Let us first understand that the relationship between every man and his woman is unique and cannot be forced into the common mould of feminism or male-chauvinism and that this collective strife between the sexes is only a favourite pastime of those few with tumid egos and ample of time on their hands to make mountains out of mole-hills. Such mundane trivia should not be allowed to offend the beautiful bond that was meant to be between Adam and Eve!
