MUMBAI, OCT 23: A fresh bunch of Mumbai lads aspiring for big-time cricket received a jolt at Wankhede Stadium this afternoon. An inept batting display by Mumbai batsmen gave Maharashtra the initiative in the West Zone Cooch Behar under-19 encounter here today. The Mumbai bowlers, however, restored some pride at the closing stages by prising out two rival wickets.
Leading the days honours was 18-year-old Pune off-spinner Kashinath Khadkikar, who claimed six wickets for 42 runs. The first year Bachelor of Commerce student of SP College, playing his first Cooch Behar match, bowled a teasing line to lure the rival batsmen to doom.
Electing to bat, Mumbai showed no sense of application and crashed from a healthy 92-2 to a miserable 139-9, three of them falling at 125. The clatter of wickets was temporarily stemmed by the resilient last pair, Shakti Prasad 35 not out: 62b, 56m, 3215;4, 1215;6 and Gaurang Joglekar 3.
Opener Vinayak Mane 44: 105b, 145m, 5215;4 was the only other batsman to defy the opposition.Interestingly, it was his dismissal that triggered the collapse.
Maharashtra lost opener Virag Awate 0 and Narendra Jadhav 4 with only ten runs on the board.
