The Kerala Women8217;s Commission has debunked concerns of the National Commission for Women on the increasing marriages between the state8217;s Muslim women to Arab nationals and blamed the body for raking up a non-issue.

Referring to the recent visit of the NCW, when it held 8216;8216;public hearings8217;8217; on Arabic kalyanam Arab marriages at Kozhikode, chairperson of the state commission M. Kamalam said: 8216;8216;Muslims in Kerala are a very progressive community and should not be projected in any other way.8217;8217;

She accused the commission of continuing the campaign against marriages with Arab nationals only on the basis of claims by some persons.

Kamalam, a two-time legislator and a former minister, said the NCW was unnecessarily 8216;8216;intervening in states and was tackling serious issues superficially8217;8217;.

She added that most of the issues taken up by NCW members during their visit had already been resolved by the state commission.

Earlier, NCW chairperson Poornima Advani had blamed the state commission for not attending their public hearings in Kerala. However, Kamalam said the state panel was an autonomous body and was in no way subservient to the NCW. 8216;8216;Even before we were told, we conducted detailed public hearings on harassment at workplaces with the help of researchers and sent our recommendations to the government,8217;8217; she said.

8216;8216;Our problems are different,8217;8217; she said, adding: 8216;8216;Does the NCW know that the biggest problem in Kerala today is the ill-treatment of girls who go abroad for employment?8217;8217; According to her, the Kerala Commission is the only one to have a full-fledged police wing headed by an Inspector General-level officer, with 17 constables and a law department.
