This refers to Shekhar Gupta8217;s 8216;Who8217;s afraid of the bulldozer8217; IE, December 24. True, politicians will never reform property laws, modernise land records, or cut stamp duties to free the real estate business from the grip of the black economy. The Delhi High court had ordered the demolition of all the illegal constructions but the properties of politicians have been exempted by the Municipal Corporation Delhi. The Indian Express campaign against these high-profile politicians raises hope.

Campus outrage
8226; The murder of Professor Puri at IISc Bangalore is perhaps the most shocking event of the waning year. So far, teaching institutions have been free from such acts. Now all important institutions will have to beef up their security system.

8226; It is shocking that an innocent person was killed in the campus of an academic institution in Bangalore. A few questions: How did the attacker come to know about the exact timing of the programme of the day? How did the car come to the campus without being noticed or checked by others, including the security? How did the person disappear in the car without being noticed after the incident? Every such incident indicates the possible role of at least one insider who was present in the proceedings or aware of the programme schedule.

Don8217;t forget them
8226; It is shameful that ever since the 1971 Indo-Pak war culminating in the liberation of Bangladesh due to the heroic action of India8217;s armed forces, 54 Indian POWs are still languishing in Pakistani jails. On the other hand, as per the Geneva Convention, India promptly repatriated a record number of 93,000 Pakistani POWs held in Indian custody. Pakistan8217;s double standards in this regard cannot be condoned. This matter needs to be raised by the Indian authorities in the UN Assembly to seek the release of Indian POWs from Pakistani captivity.

A weak response
8226; Ever since the change of guard at the Centre, the activities of terrorists have become more hectic. The impression is that the present government is weak in countering this problem. The best example of this compromising mindset is the release of a terrorist who killed an IPS officer on duty in Andhra Pradesh for the ostensible reason of 8216;good conduct8217;.

Empowering, this
8226; It was heartening to note in 8216;Tsunami thoughts: fighting fit on Boxing Day8217;, IE, December 26 that the fisherfolk who suffered most from the tsunami disaster will for the first time in their lives officially own the land on which their houses are being built with wives being given joint title to the property along with their husbands. This is a step for the empowerment of women in the true sense of the term.
