Ajmal Kasab, who has been in the custody of the Mumbai Police for nearly a month since 26/11, sported a long beard and looked calm and at ease while a magistrate visited the lock-up to preside over proceedings to extend his custody. Security concerns prevented an appearance in a regular court. Those who saw him said Kasab seemed to have accepted his fate.

Kasab, who has 12 cases against him, had his police custody extended until January 6 in the case registered at the Marine Drive police station for hijacking a Skoda at gunpoint after abandoning a police jeep. On December 11, the magistrate had had sent Kasab to police custody for 14 days.

The terrorist, who has been in solitary confinement, appeared in a small room in the Crime Branch office, where metropolitan magistrate N Shrimangle conducted the proceedings with public prosecutor E Dhamal and police officers. It was Dhamal who described how Kasab looked. 8220;Kasab has grown a beard, which might be because the police have not given him a razor for fear that he will harm himself. He had no emotions on his face.8221;

According to sources, when the magistrate asked him if he had any complaints against the police, Kasab did not look and merely shook his head. He remained standing through out the five-minute procedure, hands in his pockets. He was not wearing handcuffs, a police source said. Otherwise, Dhamal said. Kasab looked calm and, in fact, disinterested in the hearing.

Though the extension of custody came in a case regarding a car theft, the police want to nail him for what was inside the car. 8220;The primary focus is still on the explosives. He was loaded with arms and explosives when he fled in the car that he and his associate had hijacked,8221; said Rakesh Maria, JCP Crime. Kasab and Ismael Khan, who was shot dead eventually, had ambushed and killed six policemen, including Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar.
