Seeking to clear the air over a speech made by CPIM leader Subhash Chakraborty in West Bengal criticising election officials, party general secretary Prakash Karat has written to the Election Commission saying the former8217;s intention was not to show EC in poor light.

As Karat made the clarifications, the latest episode has added one more to the number of run-ins that the Left has had with the EC since preparations began for Bengal polls.

However, the CPIM chief declined to divulge the contents of his letter to the Commission. Sources said, while a clarification was given, there was no apology from

the party on the Bengal leader8217;s remarks.

In a speech last month in Medinipore, Chakraborty had alleged that poll officials were high-handed in their behaviour. He is believed to have warned them that they would be on watch, and the Left Front would continue to hold office. He reportedly warned officials of dire consequences if they did not fall in line.

Taking note of reports on the speech made by Chakraborty, who is the state8217;s Transport Minister, the EC issued notice to the CPIM , asking for clarifications.

It also directed the state election authorities to lodge a formal police complaint against Chakraborty.

On Monday, Left leaders had met CEC B.N. Tandon and presented him a long list of 8216;8216;suggestions8217;8217; of conduct of elections and how things had gone wrong in West Bengal.
