With Union Commerce and Industries Minister Kamal Nath lending his support to the much-maligned Tata Motors small car project in Singur, the West Bengal government today asserted that the land transfer will be completed by Friday.
8220;The process of transferring land to the Tatas would be over in the next two days. Primary work on the project has started,8221; West Bengal Industries Minister Nirupam Sen said in New Delhi after meeting with Kamal Nath. Sen also welcomed Mamata Banerjee8217;s decision to call off the two-day strike called by her party.
Ruling out any possibility of relocating the project, Sen said: 8220;It is not possible. How can industry come up without the required infrastructure. First, we have to build infrastructure and then we think about setting industrial units in wasteland,8221; he said, adding that his government at the moment 8220;is in no position to choose8221;.
Meanwhile, Kamal Nath, who today became the first Congress Minister to openly back Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, also took a dig at Mamata. 8220;Every state government should try to attract industrial projects and it is the duty of all political parties in the states to support such projects and look at them judiciously,8221; he said.
Kamal Nath echoed Bhattacharjee8217;s words: 8220;Industry cannot come up in vacuum. It needs to have some ground. Political parties should not further vitiate the atmosphere.8221;
The Minister reminded Mamata that 8220;other state governments were waiting to lap up the project8221;.
8220;The state government should sort out the matter, but for that political parties need to come to the table to negotiate,8221; he added.
