CHANDIGARH, May 29: Former UT chief engineer K.K. Jerath has been declared a proclaimed offender by Judicial Magistrate Ist Class Jasbir Singh in the Engineering Department kickback case.

Directing the attachment of his Sector 15 residence along with two fixed deposit receipts, the Magistrate has also ordered the issuance of warrants of attachment to the District Magistrate and the manager of State Bank of Patiala8217;s High Court branch. The attachment will remain in operation till July 2.

Currently under suspension, Jerath has been evading arrest ever since he was booked by the Vigilance Department under the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to the prosecution, kickbacks worth lakhs had been received by Jerath for issuing supply orders during his tenure as the CE. His name was present in the diaries of the alleged middlemen recovered during raids by the I-T authorities on their residences in November last year, the prosecution had added.

Meanwhile, alleged middlemen Dinesh Sharma, Suresh Kumar Sharma and Sunil Kalia, along with junior engineer J.K. Gandhi and former CE8217;s aide R.P. Vashistha, were further remanded to judicial custody till June 12 by UT Additional District and Sessions Judge M.R. Batra in the same case today.The quot;middlemenquot; had earlier been booked by the Vigilance Department under the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 406, 409, 420 and 120-B of the IPC.

According to the prosecution, certain diaries mentioning the names of UT Administration officials receiving illegal gratification along with the amount, were recovered during the raids. Gandhi and Vashistha were, meanwhile, arrested on the basis of these diaries. According to the prosecution, Gandhi had received nearly Rs 38,000, while approximately Rs 69,000 had been paid to Vashistha as illegal gratification.
