Jordan8217;s security forces were interrogating scores of suspects on Friday in connection with this week8217;s triple bombings in Amman, even as Al Qaeda issued an Internet statement claiming an Iraqi married couple and two Iraqi men were behind the attacks.

8220;A group of martyrdom-seekers carried out the planning and implementation. They comprised three men and a woman who decided to accompany her husband on the path to martyrdom,8221; said the statement.

8220;It was agreed to use suicide belts for precision and to cause maximum damage,8221; it said.

The authorities have began hunting for Islamist underground cells. A security source said police had searched poor neighbourhoods of Amman where many Iraqi workers live.

Jordan has long managed to defy the perception that it would be an obvious target of Islamic militants as a close ally of the United States that is on speaking terms with Israel.

The coordinated attack, one of the worst in Jordan8217;s modern history killed 56 people and shattered Jordan8217;s sense of being an island of stability in a troubled region. 8212;Reuters
